    Men's wetsuit thickness

One of the most important things to consider when you've decided to invest in a wetsuit is the wetsuit's neoprene thickness. The thicker the suit, the warmer it is! Neoprene is a synthetic rubber that provides thermal insulation and buoyancy, and is the primary material used in wetsuits. The quality of the neoprene will have an impact on the durability of the suit. On the other hand, the thickness of the neoprene will determine how much thermal insulation the wetsuit provides, as well as its flexibility. Our wetsuits for men are available in a range of neoprene thicknesses, from as low as 2mm and up to 6mm. The reason for this wide selection of neoprene thicknesses is primarily related to the fluctuating water temperatures we are exposed to here in Denmark. A shorty wetsuit is a good option for warm water and mild weather as it covers your arms and torso without making you too hot. For colder water and air temperatures, a full length wetsuit provides full body coverage to keep you warm from head to toe. Typically 2mm shorties, 3/2mm & 4/3mm fullsuits are suitable for the warmer summer months, while 5/4mm fullsuits are a good all round suit that works well into both spring and autumn. In the winter months when the water temperature is at its lowest, the 6/5 mm fullsuit hooded winter wetsuit is the perfect choice. Whatever your needs, we have a wetsuit that will keep you comfortable in the water. Remember, when it comes to water temperatures and neoprene thickness, there is typically no definitive answer to the perfect combination. This will typically be a matter of individual needs, personal preferences, water sports activity and experience. Below we have made a rough overview of which wetsuit thickness is suitable for the different water temperatures. It is based on the personal experiences of Westwind staff and should not be seen as a definitive conclusion.

Water temperature | Neoprene thickness |Wetsuit type

    22-25°C | 2/2mm | Shorty

    20-22°C | 3/2mm | Shorty or fullsuit summer wetsuit

    18-20°C | 3/2mm | Fullsuit summer wetsuit

    15-19°C | 4/3mm | Fullsuit all-round wetsuit

    13-17°C | 5/4mm| Fullsuit all-round wetsuit + thin neoprene shoes

10-13°C | 5/4mm | Hooded winter wetsuit + thin neoprene shoes + thin neoprene gloves

0-11°C | 6/5mm | Hooded winter wetsuit + thick neoprene shoes + thick neoprene gloves

    Men's wetsuit maintenance

If you have invested in a wetsuit, we encourage you to take good care of the suit so that it lasts for many trips in the water. This benefits both your wallet and the climate. Below we have created a list of Westwind tips for the care and maintenance of wetsuits. If you follow it, your wetsuit and your other neoprene products will remain functional for many years into the future:

Rinse your wetsuit in cold fresh water after each trip on the water. This removes salt, sand and other impurities that can slowly degrade your wetsuit.

Never use washing-up liquid when rinsing the suit, as this can damage the neoprene.

Regular use of a neoprene piss-off soap/conditioner when you rinse the suit helps keep the neoprene soft and supple. This contributes to an extension of the life of the suit.

It is best to dry your wetsuit indoors as direct sunlight and heat can damage the neoprene. At the same time, it should be hung to dry in a room with adequate air circulation

Dry your wetsuit thoroughly before storing it. The wetsuit should not be the least bit damp before you pack it away for an extended period. The wetsuit should also never be exposed to undue pressure during long periods of storage.

Store your wetsuit in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Regular checking of the condition of the suit, i.e. check for holes, tears or other minor damage to your wetsuit. If damage has occurred, it should be repaired as soon as possible with a neoprene glue. In this way, you avoid small damages growing into major damages that require professional repair.

Men's wetsuit for stand up paddling and the long john wetsuit

It is important to choose a men's wetsuit for stand up paddling that fits well and is made of high quality neoprene material. A wetsuit that fits well will not only keep you warm on your SUP trip, but will also provide extra buoyancy should you fall into the water. However, remember that it is a legal requirement to wear a safety-approved life jacket when you SUP. See our large selection of swimming and life jackets here. In addition, a high-quality neoprene material will be durable and able to withstand the stress of regular paddle movements. At the same time, a tight and well-fitting wetsuit will reduce the risk of abrasions around the armpits. If you want to be sure to avoid chafing in and around the armpit, the best choice is a so-called long john wetsuit.
