SKIMBOARDING, A FUN AND SIMPLE WATER SPORT!
What is skimboarding?
Skimboarding is a water sport where you have to 'skim' across the water on a skimboard. Skimming should be understood as gliding across the water. A skimboard is different from a surfboard. The skimboard is characterized by its flat profile and its short length compared to a surfboard. Skimboarding is typically done along the water's edge, as skimboarding requires relatively shallow water. When a wave washes up on the beach it leaves the sand wet. The wet sand covered by a few centimeters of sand is what skimboarders want to take advantage of. This means that skimboarding in the sea is 'all about timing'. Once you crack the code, you can't get enough!
Skimboarding can also take place on flat water, this is called flatwater skimboarding. Flatwater skimboarding is characterized by the fact that you can practice tricks more easily. In the same way as flatground skateboaridng, you can practice tricks such as ollie, shove-it's and even kickflips. There are hours of fun practicing these flatwater tricks on your skimboard. It's just a matter of finding a flatwater spot and then start practicing tricks.
Skimboarding is therefore a true waterside activity, and is brilliant for days at the beach. At the same time, it is an activity that all age groups can enjoy. So an investment in a skimboard will benefit the whole family or group of friends!
Skimboard construction and types
There are several different types of skimboards. These different types can be differentiated by the way the board is constructed. The simplest skimboard is made of 100% wood and has a lacquered exterior. These boards are great to start your skimboard adventure on as they are durable and are cheaper compared to more advanced boards. We sell wooden skimboards from Skim-One at good prices. A super beginner alternative to the wooden board is a foam skimboard. A foam skimboard will have a foam coated exterior, which ensures that a blow from the board does not make a big deal. This is especially an advantage for children who want to get involved in the sport. At the same time, the board is also extremely durable with its foam exterior. At the more advanced end of skimboard constructions are boards with an EPS foam core and an exterior in fiberglass or carbon fiber. These boards will undoubtedly provide the best glide as well as the most performance oriented experience. This type of board is of course also the most expensive, but the money is well spent if you want to develop your skimboarding. We have, among other things, epoxy skimboards from the brands Norden and Skim-One.
Skimboard Size Guide
Once the choice has been made on the type of skimboard, a decision must be made as to which size is right for you. The advantage of choosing skimboard size is that it is solely based on your body weight. Below you can see our skimboard size guide:
- Up to 45 kg: 39" - 43" (99-109 cm)
- 45-65 kg: 43" - 46" (109-117 cm)
- 55-75 kg: 46" - 50" (117-127 cm)
- 65-80 kg: 50" - 52" (127-132 cm)
- 75-90 kg: 52" - 54" (132-137 cm)
- 80-100 kg: 54" - 56" (137-142 cm)
- 90-110 kg: 56" (142 cm)
This guide will help you find the skimboard that best suits your weight, ensuring optimal performance and fun on the water.
Skimboarding tips and tricks
Skimboards can be extremely slippery. Therefore, it is a good idea to apply surf wax to the entire upper side of the skimboard. We recommend a basecoat wax, as a basecoat wax will not wear off to the same extent compared to softer waxes. The wax gives an increased grip and control over the board. In this way, the wax will help you get more fun out of skimboarding. Among other things, the execution of maneuvers such as shove-it's will be much easier the more grip your board has. Grip is really the key to getting the most control out of the skimboard. Therefore, skimboarders can with good reason consider investing in a pair of neoprene shoes or neoprene boots. In addition to extra grip, the neoprene footwear will act as protection against impacts from the skimboard.
