    THE SUP PADDLE

Whether you are on your SUP on the sea, lake or river, the SUP paddle is probably the most important tool you have at your disposal. The paddle is your primary source of propulsion and control of the board, and that is precisely why it is crucial to choose the right one and, of course, preferably on the first try.

Simply put, a SUP paddle consists of a long shaft with a small handle at the top and a blade at the bottom. The shaft can be made of materials such as fibreglass, aluminium, carbon fibre, wood or plastic. The blade can also be made of different materials, such as plastic, wood, glass fibre, carbon fiber or different composite material. The size and shape of the blade varies depending on its use and according to which SUP discipline you prefer.

When choosing a SUP paddle, it is important to consider your height and paddle style. A common rule of thumb is that the shaft of the paddle should be able to reach between 15 and 20 cm above your height if you have the paddle standing next to you. In most cases, most SUP paddles are adjustable and can thus be adjusted perfectly to your height. And if you follow the above rule of thumb, you can be sure to get the most out of your paddle decks. If you primarily want to use your SUP paddle for touring or other forms of cruising, it may be a good idea to choose a paddle with a larger blade. The reason is that a larger blade will give more momentum and will thus help you cover a longer distance. If, on the other hand, you intend to use the paddle for wave SUP surfing, it may be better to choose a smaller paddle with a smaller blade, as this will result in more maneuverability out on the water.

When paddling with your SUP paddle, the right technique is important both in relation to maximizing your paddle strokes, but at the same time also to avoid injuries. Your grip on the paddle should be firm, but not too tight, and you should keep the blade vertical and pull it backwards through the water by slightly rotating your body. This approach and technique helps you transfer the most power possible through the paddle and provides more control and precision.
