Safety is an important factor when it comes to stand-up paddleboarding. One of the most important things to remember when going on the water with SUP is to have a good quality leash attached to your SUP. A leash connects you to your board and ensures that your board is always connected to you, so you don't lose it in the waves or strong current. On this page you can see WestWind's selection of coiled and straight SUP leashes.

    SUP LEASHES

Safety is an important factor when it comes to stand-up paddleboarding. One of the most important things to remember when going on the water with SUP is to have a good quality leash attached to your SUP. A leash connects you to your board and ensures that your board is always connected to you, so you don't lose it in the waves or strong current.

There are different types of SUP leashes, but some of the most popular are coiled leashes and straight leashes. Coiled leashes are ideal for SUP on flat water, as they ensure that the leash does not hang in the water and create drag. Straight leashes are preferable for SUP wave surfing as you typically want to create a safe distance to the board in cases where you fall off the board on a wave.

Always remember to invest in a good quality SUP leash to ensure your own and others' safety when you paddleboard.

At Westwind, we sell leashes from recognized brands which include Creatures of Leisure, FCS & Dakine, among others

    SUP leash length

When choosing a SUP leash, the length of the leash is one of the key factors to take into account. A leash that is too short can limit your freedom of movement on the board, while a leash that is too long can drag too much in the water and create unnecessary drag. A rule of thumb when choosing a straight leash is to choose a leash that is about 1 times the length of your board. If your SUP is 8 feet, you must also have a leash with a length of 8 feet

    SUP leash maintenance

Finally, it is also important to remember to maintain your SUP leash regularly. A really good idea is to clean/rinse the leash in fresh water after use. Especially if you have been at sea and the leash has been exposed to salt water. If you want your leash holder for a long time, it can be a really good idea to store it in a dry place in the shade.
