Over the past 3 years, our product manager for boards, Dani Aeberli, and our quality control expert, Vasin Siritho, have developed a new technology exclusive to DUOTONE. We call it FULL CUSTOM CNC.

We use a construction method identical to the highest-end custom-made boards. Instead of using a mould to shape the EPS foam core, each EPS block is CNC milled. This ensures maximum precision and reduces weight.

As with top custom board makers, the main advantage lies in the process. We call this SINGLE PROCESS TECHNOLOGY, and it’s the key to our industry-leading weight-to-strength ratio.

Instead of combining steps to save time and money, each step follows its own process. For example, instead of bonding the PVC sandwich to the EPS core in one go, we vacuum-bag the top and bottom PVC layers with the EPS core separately.

Also, instead of using standard 3mm PVC sheets for the whole board, we use thicker and thinner PVC plates depending on stress areas, making the board lighter yet stronger.

For all D/LAB boards, we use our most advanced layup, consisting of more than 60 individual parts and components (nearly 20% more than our SLS Premium Sandwich Construction).

On top of that, we use the finest composite materials available today.

1. All carbon fibres used are a mix of high strength and high stiffness carbon types, depending on the needs of each board section. Our high stiffness carbon is also found in high-end products like aircraft, Formula One cars, and our Platinum SLS masts, booms, and extensions.
2. Innegra is a high stiffness propylene fibre with unbeatable tensile strength and ding resistance. It offers similar strength to Kevlar but is much stiffer. Plus, Innegra is the best composite fibre to prevent dents.
3. We use our exclusive high-performance S_GLASS+ with extra high silica content, offering much higher tensile strength and about 10-20% greater stiffness.
4. Finally, we use our exclusive DUOTONE SENTEX resin impregnated with silicon nano-spheres, which helps reduce weight even further without losing durability.

Instead of using the same layup on all boards, we apply a DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC FLEX CONSTRUCTION for all our D/LAB boards, since the demands of different disciplines (wave, freestyle, freeride, racing) and conditions vary greatly.

1. Racing boards are designed for maximum performance (instant acceleration and top speed). These boards need to be as stiff as possible. To achieve this uncompromising stiffness, we use a very high carbon content in all FALCON D/LAB layups.
2. Wave boards, however, need some “give” because they are very short and could become too stiff and hard to control with a full carbon layup. Therefore, GRIP D/LAB boards have a higher Innegra and S_GLASS+ content. These high-tech composites have much higher tensile strength, preventing breakage after hard landings. To still get outstanding “spring-back” that makes the board more responsive and greatly improves acceleration, we use unidirectional carbon reinforcements along the length.

Last but not least, every single board size has its own individual layup. That’s the final step in personalising the construction.

The result speaks for itself: D/LAB boards are about 500 grams lighter than our SLS boards and up to a full kilo lighter than other mass-produced boards. And it’s the first time a production board can compete with the lightest custom boards out there.

All this is achieved without sacrificing durability because we always follow our core motto: LIGHT DONE RIGHT.

Please note that quantities will be strictly limited at least in the first year—just like a real custom board. That’s why only the most popular GRIP 4 and GRIP 3 sizes will be available with D/LAB technology.

• The GRIP 4 with its quad fin setup gives you maximum drive and grip for committed rail-to-rail turns, even in XXL waves.
• The GRIP 3 has slightly better acceleration thanks to an efficient rocker with a low-drag entry, which is especially helpful in jumping conditions. The thruster fin setup allows earlier tail release for tighter, slashier turns, even in less-than-ideal waves.
