Surfing in Hvide Sande - WestWind guide

Surf i Hvide Sande - WestWind guide

Rikke Breinholt |

There are few places in Denmark where the surfing scene is as vibrant as in Hvide Sande. Here you will find the power of the North Sea and the tranquility of the fjord. It is a paradise for anyone who loves water and wind sports. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced surfer, you will find everything you need here. Hvide Sande offers both waves and flat water.

In this guide, we tell you about three popular surfing spots in Hvide Sande: Hvide Sande Nord, Hvide Sande Syd, and Hvide Sande Sydmolen.
If you want to see more spots along the coast, you can find the complete overview in our spot guides.

1. Hvide Sande Nord - The Fjord Side

At the northern end of the town is a popular surfing spot on Ringkøbing Fjord. The fjord has large shallow areas where you can touch the bottom almost everywhere, making it perfect for both children and adults.
All wind directions work here, because you can go up to 800 meters out and still get stable wind. This provides fantastic conditions for both windsurfing and kitesurfing. The water is flat, safe, and easy to navigate, so you can enjoy surfing at your own pace. This also makes the area ideal for kayaking and SUP.

On land, there are good grassy areas for rigging up and parking close to the water. Here you will also find WestWind's surf school, shop, café, and bathing facilities, which can be used after a day on the water at a fair price.

NOTE: Be aware of fishing nets, bathers, dogs, children, and onshore winds when you go out on the water.

2. Hvide Sande Syd - The Fjord Side

South of Hvide Sande is another spacious surf spot right on Ringkøbing Fjord. Here you will find shallow and relatively flat water. You can touch the bottom about 500 meters from shore, which provides safe and predictable conditions on the water. The spot is popular with families, solo surfers, and groups—regardless of experience.
The conditions are particularly good for windsurfers and work in almost all wind directions, except north and northwest, where the wind becomes more unstable.

On land, there are good grassy areas for rigging up and excellent parking facilities close to the water. The spot is easy to get to. As on the north side, you will also find WestWind's surf school, shop, café, and bathing facilities, which can be used at a fair price.

NOTE: Be aware of fishing nets, bathers, dogs, children, and onshore winds when you go out on the water.

Hvide Sande - Sydmolen

If you head out to the Sydmole, you will find a surf spot right on the North Sea. In contrast to the calm fjord conditions, the sea here offers power, waves, and more challenging energy.
Just behind the dunes, you will find a large parking lot close to the beach with access to toilets. It is also possible to stay overnight in your car for a fee. WestWinds surf café is located in connection with the area, where you can rent equipment, take a surfing course, or enjoy a cup of coffee.

4. Flynder Point
To the left of the Sydmole is Flynder Point - one of Hvide Sande's most popular wave spots. There is plenty of space on the wide sandy beach, and the spot can accommodate all disciplines. The waves are often soft and calm, but can grow large when the wind and weather conditions are right. This makes the area suitable for both experienced and expert surfers.

The shore break is usually easy to get through, and the conditions are ideal for practicing everything from paddling technique to your first take-offs.

5. Betweens
To the right of the Sydmole is Betweens, known for its calm and stable waves. Here, you are well protected from the wind, and the conditions are ideal for both surf and SUP.
The area is exclusively for surfing, and wind sports activities are therefore not permitted on this side of the pier.

Water conditions and currents can be affected by the lock on the fjord side, so always check the conditions before entering the water. The current often moves outwards towards the sea near the piers.

Safety first

At Sydmolen, it is important to be aware of the Safety First zone. This ensures that surfers, swimmers, and fishermen can use the area safely. A map of the area can be found below and is also posted at the spots so that you can familiarize yourself with the area before entering the water.
